Hospice Care Statistics

According to the National Association for Home Care:

  • There are more than 2,200 hospices participating in the Medicare program in the US, with an additional 200 volunteer hospices.
  • Recent reports show that more than 570,000 patients received hospice care through Medicare or Medicaid programs each year.
  • Nearly 80 percent of hospice patients are age 65 or older. Almost as many males as females are hospice patients, and most hospice patients are married.
  • The most common terminal illness among hospice patients is cancer.
