Heart disease
caused one of every five deaths in the United States in 2002 according to
the American Heart Association. This is why St John’s Mercy
Medical Center is dedicated to providing quality care for patients
with heart attacks. Heart
attack, also called Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), has several national
quality indicators that exhibit how successful we are at providing quality
care for patients experiencing a heart attack.
Aspirin
on Arrival:
- Early use of
aspirin in patients with heart attack reduces bad outcomes
- The chart below
illustrates the percentage of heart
attack patients who were given aspirin within 24 hours of arrival
at the hospital.

Aspirin
Prescribed at Discharge:
- Aspirin lowers
the risk of future heart attacks. St.
John's Mercy is committed to continued care for patients after discharge
from the hospital.
- The chart below
illustrates the percentage of
patients (who can take aspirin) who are prescribed aspirin
after discharge.
