Clinical Measures: Colon
Cancer Screenings
What we measured: Based
on a representative sample of patient charts from each physician, SJMMG
looked at whether patients over age 50 and at average risk were screened
for colon cancer using one of three methods:
- Colonoscopy, administered every 10 years
- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (Flex. Sig.), every 5 years
- Fecal Occult Blood Test
(FOBT), annually.
Colon cancer is among the most common types of cancer, with more than 104,000
new diagnoses each year. The good news is that, when detected early, colon
cancers have high cure rates. In addition, compliance with these screening
guidelines may prevent colon cancer from occurring in the first place.
HP 2010’s sample
measured only the number of patients over age 50, nationally, who received
either an FOBT within the past 2 years or a Flex Sig at any time.
HEDIS samples reflect
the number of patients between ages 50 and 80 who received any appropriate
screening (either colonoscopy, Flex Sig, FOBT, or a double contrast barium
enema) for colon cancer. HEDIS
groups the results into percentile rankings. SJMMG’s
results exceed those of the top 25 percent in this category.
