Pediatric Intensive
Care Unit
St. John's Mercy Medical Center offers the only pediatric intensive care unit
(PICU) in St. Louis County with the specialized staff and equipment to treat
severe illnesses and injuries. Our PICU's technology is matched only by the
experience and expertise of our staff of pediatricians, pediatric nurses, and
pediatric specialists and subspecialists who care for children around-the-clock.
Physicians
throughout the St. Louis area transfer children to St. John's Mercy Medical
Center because they trust St. John's Mercy's expertise in caring for children.
Our west St. Louis County location also makes it convenient for the families
who need to use these specialized pediatric intensive care services.
Surgery Services
St. John's Mercy offers
comprehensive pediatric surgery services in the specialties of otolaryngology
(ear, nose and throat), orthopedic, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, general
surgery and urology. Our surgical service also includes the pediatric subspecialists
to support those surgeries, such as pediatric anesthesia and radiology, as
well as our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). St. John's Mercy has a special
focus on our young patients, including a separate pediatric recovery room where
parents can quickly be reunited with their child after surgery.
Emergency Care
St. John's
Mercy also saw nearly 18,000 pediatric patients in the Emergency Department
in our fiscal year 2005 (July 2004 - June 2005). Emergency care is provided
by highly skilled pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric nurses and other
specialists. St. John's Mercy Medical Center offers a Pediatric Emergency Department
designed and dedicated exclusively for children, featuring its own reception
and triage area, separate exam and treatment rooms for pediatric patients,
advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment, centrally-located imaging services,
child-friendly decor and family waiting area.
Pediatric Hospitalist Program
St. John's Mercy offers a pediatric hospitalist program to assist private physicians
in the care of their patients, or care for pediatric patients who do not
have a primary care patient. A pediatric hospitalist physician is a board-certified
or board-eligible pediatrician who specializes in the care of children who
are hospitalized. Our pediatric hospitalists are in the hospital 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week and respond to all pediatric emergencies in any of
our pediatric areas. The hospitalists are also a vital part of the team
for any pediatric procedure that requires sedation.
Education and Outreach

of classes, programs and special events throughout the year. Classes are offered
not only at St. John's Mercy but at many locations throughout the St. Louis
area. Many programs are free of charge, and some require a reasonable fee. In
2005, St. John's Mercy served close to 8,000 participants in nearly 500 classes
