Screening and Diagnostic Mammography

The St. John's Mercy Breast Center offers state-of-the-art digital mammography to detect and diagnose breast cancer and other breast disease in women. All of our technologists are specially trained and certified in mammography. Digital mammography provides electronic images of the breasts that can be enhanced by computer technology, stored on computers, and even transmitted electronically.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasounds may be used as a supplement to your mammogram or as a separate test. Ultrasonic sound waves are used to produce an image of the breast tissue. Breast ultrasounds assist in detecting and classifying conditions of the breast.

Stereotactic and Ultrasound Guided Core Biopsies

During a stereotactic biopsy, mammographic guidance allows us to remove a small cylinder of tissue (also called a core) to diagnose breast abnormalities. No incision is necessary. The St. John's Mercy Breast Center uses the en-bloc® biopsy system, the newest technology available and the first of its kind in St. Louis. The en-bloc® biopsy system allows us to retrieve one intact piece of breast tissue through a small incision. This system produces specimens that offer additional information to the pathologist for diagnosis and is less invasive than traditional surgical biopsy.

Education/Support

The St. John's Mercy Breast Center is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in women. Our staff can educate you on effective breast care and prevention as well as provide you with resources on support groups, breast health information and more.

MRI

MRI is available on campus, and results can be read in the Breast Center.
