Diabetes Services

Diabetes is a serious disease, but it can be successfully treated and managed. Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes care. That's why St. John's Mercy is committed to providing high-quality diabetes services and education programs for diabetic patients and their loved ones.

St. John’s Mercy Medical Center
Since 1986, the diabetes education program at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-management Education. Our ADA recognition status means we have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide the most current information about diabetes care. provides information for inpatients, outpatients and family members on diabetes management including: individual diet counseling; blood glucose monitoring; medications; and outpatient follow-up with a nurse educator, dietitian or social worker. Our services include:

Outpatient Diabetes Education
St. John's Mercy offers coordinated care for people with diabetes through education and nutrition counseling. A certified nurse educator, a registered dietitian and a social worker work together to assist the patient in management of their disease. The nurse educator provides instruction on self-monitoring of blood glucose, insulin administration, oral agents, exercise and all of the issues relating to the management of diabetes. The dietitian provides nutrition counseling for the patient and family. For an appointment with the diabetes educator, call 314-251-4958. Diabetes Support Group (Adult)
This free support group helps patients, families and friends learn to live with diabetes. Call 314-251-4958 for information or to be placed on the mailing list.

Gestational Diabetes Management Program
Basic diabetes management is taught by a certified diabetes nurse educator and a registered dietitian. An individual diet and instruction regarding self-monitoring of blood glucose is provided. Insulin administration is taught on physician order. Call 314-251-8885.

Diabetic Foot Care Center
The Diabetic Foot Clinic provides comprehensive foot care for all diabetics including nail trimming, corn and callus reduction, management of foot ulcers, and prevention of common diabetic foot disorders. The goal of the clinic is to use a conservative approach to best meet the individual's needs through:

  • Early intervention, Treatment and Prevention
  • Screening
  • Education
  • Proper Footwear

St. John's Mercy Hospital - Washington
St. John's Mercy Hospital in Washington offers a comprehensive, ADA-recognized Diabetes Education program on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Inpatient Diabetes Education Program
As part of the Inpatient Diabetes Education Program at St. John's Mercy, a diabetes nurse educator will assess all inpatient diabetics to determine their needs and establish priorities for appropriate inpatient and outpatient education.

Outpatient Diabetes Education Program
St. John's Mercy believes that the outpatient setting may be a more conducive atmosphere for learning. Therefore, to close the loop in diabetes education and awareness, St. John's Mercy Hospital offers an Outpatient Diabetes Education Program for diabetics recently discharged from the hospital or any diabetic in need of additional diabetes self-management skills. The Outpatient Diabetes Education Program offers two formats for learning, based on the needs and preferences of the patient:

  • Individualized, one-on-one meetings with an outpatient diabetes educator and registered dietitian
  • Group Classes, with an outpatient diabetes educator, registered dietitian and pharmacist
