Dietary Counseling and Nutrition
Services
Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a healthy diet are essential
to reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease. St. John’s Mercy
community dietitians provide individual dietary assessment and nutritional

Cardiovascular Rehabilitation
Programs
Rehabilitation after cardiovascular surgery or a diagnosis of cardiovascular
disease can help patients safely resume normal activities and improve
overall health. St. John’s Mercy offers extensive inpatient and
outpatient cardiac rehabilitation programs. For information about outpatient

The Fitness
First Program
St. John’s Mercy Sports and Therapy offers a fitness program designed
specifically for cardiovascular patients and those with risk factors
for heart and vascular disease. Patients train with exercise specialists
and registered nurses, and the program is supervised by a medical director
who is board-certified in sports medicine. For more information, call

.Support Groups
A diagnosis of cardiovascular disease can be a traumatic experience for
patients. St. John’s Mercy offers support groups and special programs
throughout the year for patients and family members:

Mended Hearts is a national, nonprofit organization
for individuals with heart disease and those who have had a cardiac
event or surgery. Members provide hope and encouragement to others
whose lives have been touched by heart disease. For information

Annual Vascular Open Screening
One day each year, the division of vascular surgery at St. John’s
Mercy hosts an open screening and provides free, noninvasive assessment
of vascular disease. For more information, please call 314-251-4755.
Smoking Cessation
Resources
St. John’s Mercy provides adult smoking cessation advice and counseling
to all heart attack and heart failure inpatients prior to discharge.
For outpatients, we offer the following smoking cessation resources:

The St. John’s
Mercy respiratory therapy department offers an eight-session program from
the American Lung Association called “Freedom from Smoking.” For

Auriculotherapy – The St. John’s
Mercy Center for New Health Options and the David C. Pratt Cancer Center
have acquired an auriculotherapy unit and have begun offering this
alternative treatment for smoking cessation. Auriculotherapy involves
a combination of electrical stimulation and placement of ear seeds
and has proven very effective in helping some patients to stop smoking.
CPR Training
St. John’s Mercy is an American Heart Association (AHA) Training
Center and is the fifth-largest CPR training center in the United States.
Our AHA Training Center trains more than 28,000 people each year. More
than 1,300 instructors teach a variety of courses to health care professionals,
emergency medical service technicians and members of the community.
Courses include CPR, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life
Support (ACLS) and PALS.
