OSTEOMYELITIS

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone. Infections of these types can be extremely difficult to treat. Standard therapy includes long-term IV antibiotics (six weeks or more) combined with surgical debridements of the bone. Osteomyelitis that persists for six months or more despite all standard treatments may require hyperbaric oxygen treatment to help eradicate any residual bone infection.

For those patients who have foot ulcers complicated by diabetes and underlying osteomyelitis, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also be required as an adjunctive therapy. In some cases amputation may be required to remove all infected bone.
