SURGICAL WOUNDS
Most surgical incisions can be expected to heal without difficulty, although
some patients may experience wound healing problems after surgery.
These complications may be related to the type and complexity of the
surgical procedure, advanced age of the patient, underlying medical
issues, infection or a history of radiation in the operative area.
Identifying the reason for the wound healing failure as well as the
cause will, in most instances, allow complete healing of the surgical
incision. Depending on the complicating factors, some cases require
tissue grafting, repeat surgery or hyperbaric oxygen therapy to achieve
ultimate healing.
