Pharmaceutical Coverage Please review your insurance plan to determine the extent of your pharmaceutical coverage, including any applicable co-payments. Your prescription coverage will be governed by the formulary used by your plan.

What is a formulary?
Most managed care insurance plans provide a list of preferred pharmaceutical products to be used by the plan's network physicians. Formularies are based on evaluations of the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of drugs. In most cases where a generic equivalent to a brand-name drug is available, the formulary will specify the generic. For medications with no generic version available, the brand-name drug will be listed.

How does a generic drug differ from the brand-name medication?
There is no difference. A generic drug is the identical medical equivalent to its brand-name counterpart. Because many major brand-name drugs are no longer protected by a patent, certain prescriptions that were previously available only as brand-name drugs are now available in safe, effective and less costly FDA-approved generic versions. Generics offer immediate cost savings in the form of lower co-payments while providing the same quality as the brand-name product.
