Medication Information for: Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT Oil)

Why? MCT Oil is a fat supplement. It is easy for babies to absorb and helps them get extra calories. It produces these extra calories without producing a lot of extra fluid. Sometimes babies with heart or breathing problems need extra calories but can't have extra fluids. High calorie formula also is used to help babies grow.

How? Give MCT Oil as ordered. MCT Oil is usually given several times a day. You should mix it with a small amount of formula. Do not give it directly into the baby's mouth because it can cause choking. If you miss a dose, do not try to make up for it by giving more. Do not give extra MCT Oil without talking to your doctor.

Your baby's dose is:
____________ml, _________times a day,

at ____________o'clock, ___________o'clock, __________o'clock and _________o'clock.

MCT Oil does not need to be stored in the refrigerator.

Any problems? Most side effects of MCT Oil would be seen in the hospital before the baby goes home. Some babies get greasy diarrhea or heartburn. Call you doctor if you see signs of diarrhea or heartburn.

ALWAYS KEEP ALL MEDICATIONS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Not all pharmacies keep MCT Oil on hand. Call ahead so the pharmacy can place a special order for your baby. Check your supply before vacations, holidays and other times when you may not be able to obtain more.
