Medication Information
for: Calcium carbonate antacid (Mylanta Supreme)
(CAL-see-um CAR-bon-ate)
Why? Calcium carbonate
is used to treat stomach acid problems in babies. Too much acid can give the
baby chest pain, like heartburn, which can cause feeding or breathing problems.
The calcium can help the baby develop stronger bones.
How? Give Mylanta
Supreme as ordered. Mylanta Supreme is usually given four to six times a day.
Your baby's dose is:
_________ml,_____________times
a day
at _________o'clock, ________
o'clock, ______o'clock, and ___________o'clock.
Measure the dose and mix
it with a small amount of milk before you give it to the baby.
Mylanta Supreme does not
have to be kept in the refrigerator.
Any problems? Most
side effects of Mylanta Supreme would be seen in the hospital before the baby
goes home. Sometimes Mylanta Supreme can cause constipation. If too much is
given, Mylanta Supreme could cause high calcium levels in the bloodstream. Most
babies like the taste of cherry flavored Mylanta Supreme.
Pharmacy rules. Mylanta
Supreme does not need a prescription. Ask the pharmacist for help if you can't
find it. Do not choose "regular" Mylanta, which is not as good for
the baby's bones.
ALWAYS KEEP ALL MEDICATIONS OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.
Check your supply before
vacations, holidays and other times when you may not be able to obtain more.
