| After three years of infertility treatments, we were thrilled to finally be pregnant. At 28 weeks, I was diagnosed with hypertension and IUGR (intra-uterine growth retardation), and admitted to the hospital for bed rest. Four weeks later, when they couldn’t get my blood pressure under control, I had to deliver our first baby at 32 weeks. Ella was born via c-section, weighing 2 lbs. 11 oz. We were lucky I was able to get the steroid shot, and Ella was doing great. She spent exactly one month in the NICU before she was finally home with us. Now, she is a healthy, active, and very determined 4 year old. I wanted to become a NICUP because I know that when you go through something like this, it’s hard for others to understand all of your many feelings. I hope as a NICUP I can provide that understanding to other parents.
