PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

Children are different from adults, and neurological disorders in children require the specialized care of pediatric neurologists. The pediatric neurologists at St. John’s Mercy Children's Hospital are not only skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of the whole range of neurological and neuromuscular conditions which affect children but have a strong commitment to providing their services in a manner which fosters parent involvement and maximizes communication with family members. They are involved in the care of children with neurological illnesses ranging from learning disorders to illnesses requiring critical care. Commonly seen problems include:

  • Autism
  • Acute and chronic effects of brain injury
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Congenital defects of the brain and spine
  • Developmental delays
  • Epilepsy
  • Headaches
  • Movement disorders, including tics
  • Seizure disorders and epilepsy
  • Tic disorders

Additionally, our pediatric neurologists have supervisory responsibilities for children with developmental challenges seen in the St. John’s Mercy Child Development Center and consulting roles in the St. John’s Mercy Children's Hospital pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. They also provide interpretations for all of the pediatric EEGs and video EEGs within the St. John’s Mercy Electroencephalography (EEG) Department.

The pediatric neurologists at St. John’s Mercy are also regularly involved in teaching and research. They are recognized leaders in their field as shown by their appointment to national and international committees which examine candidates for board certification in neurology, pediatric neurology and neurodevelopmental disabilities and to boards which evaluate research prior to publication in medical journals.
