What Counselors
Do
Genetic counselors
provide information and support to families regarding birth defects and
genetic disorders. Genetic counseling may be recommended if there are
certain indications.
A genetic counselor
is a health care professional with special training in medical genetics
who is able to present complex information in a way that is clear and
understandable. If genetic testing is available, a genetic counselor can
help a family decide whether testing is right for them. Genetic counselors
are non-directive, meaning that they do not try to persuade families regarding
genetic testing or other procedures. You will be encouraged to make decisions
that are best for your family.
Genetic counselors
are not physicians, but they work closely with physicians and other health
care providers.
