Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive method of studying and evaluating the unborn baby (fetus). Sound waves at a frequency higher than the human (or fetal) ear can hear are used to generate a 2 dimensional picture of the fetus. There is no pain or discomfort felt by either the mother or the fetus.

These images can then be used to diagnose many common problems or abnormalities in the fetus. In addition, ultrasound can be used to obtain a very accurate dating of the pregnancy (when used prior to 24 weeks gestation) and an estimation of the fetal weight. 

Ultrasound has been used for fetal studies since the late 1950's, and to date, there have been no adverse fetal effects reported; therefore, we feel that ultrasound is an extremely safe procedure. 

Ultrasound can also be used to screen for fetal chromosomal abnormalities.
