Robotic Surgery: A Minimally-Invasive Surgical Option

St. John's Mercy was a pioneer in St. Louis, offering the first da Vinci® Surgical System, a state-of-the-art robotic surgery platform, to its patients. Five years later, the medical center has successfully performed 600 robotic surgeries.

Minimally invasive surgeries offered at St. John's Mercy include:

The da Vinci system is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgery option that enables surgeons to operate with smaller incisions, greater precision and with a better view of the body than with traditional surgery. The system, which uses two robotic arms and a 3-D camera to operate inside the body, was designed to reduce trauma and recovery times, which are more significant with invasive surgeries.

Benefits of surgery with the da Vinci® system include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Less scarring
  • Quicker return to normal activities
