St. John's Mercy Hospital CT Scanner
St.
John’s Mercy Hospital has two Computerized Tomography scanners (CT scanner)
in the Imaging Service department.
While the original CT Scanner
provides diagnostic accuracy, the new CT scanner offers a variety of additional
benefits and enhanced features.
The latest model in the
line of CT Scanners from GE Medical Systems, this technology provides enhanced
diagnostic confidence with scans six times faster than the current model. This
translates to an improved, more comfortable experience for the patient, as total
time in the CT Scanner is reduced. Shorter scanning time saves time, which can
be critical, especially in trauma situations or in caring for the critically
ill.
The new scanner also offers
multi-slice CT technology, a feature that provides 3-D images of the entire
scan area and enables these images to be dissected into several layers for analysis.
With exceptional image quality, these slices enable detection of smaller structures
to help eliminate the need for more costly and invasive medical procedures.
In addition, the CT Scanner
offers Calcium Scoring capabilities for non-invasive detection of coronary artery
blockage. Calcium Scoring measures and reports coronary artery calcification,
a build-up of plaque which can cause a blockage in the coronary artery that
can lead to, among other things, coronary heart disease or heart attack. Calcium
scores then enable physicians to determine if more invasive procedures are necessary.
“Overall, the new CT Scanner
at St. John’s Mercy provides greater flexibility to the operator and physician,
allowing both to tailor the scan to the patient’s specific needs,” said Victoria
Kriete, Imaging Services Manager at St. John’s Mercy. “This will enhance service
to our patients and give our physicians greater diagnostic tools to work with.”
