St. John's Mercy Hospital MRI
The
fixed Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit (MRI) at St.
John's Mercy Hospital
is housed in a two-story, 10,000-foot addition to the hospital's west side.
MRI imagers allow radiologists
to more clearly see soft tissues such as tumors in the brain and spinal cord,
fatty tissues, muscles, tendons, arteries and optic nerves. The scanner has
some additional capabilities, including the ability to provide Magnetic Resonance
Angiography, which images vessels in better detail and often is used to locate
aneurysms and tumors. MRI is non-invasive; no pain or radiation is involved.
"The new equipment
will enhance our ability to provide the necessary imaging capability to serve
our patient population," said Greg Jamroz, MD, medical director of the
radiology department at St. John's Mercy Hospital. "It improves our ability
to evaluate by allowing visualization of structures that were not previously
available on standard radiology techniques. The new equipment is faster and
produces images with greater detail."
The fixed MRI produces
images with greater speed than a mobile unit, and its larger size and built-in
stereo will increase patient comfort during procedures. In addition, the new
unit will allow patients and physicians access to the scanner seven days a week,
24 hours a day for emergency situations.
