St.
John's Mercy Opens New Nursery
<July 9, 2002> St.
John's Mercy Hospital recently opened the new and expanded newborn nursery.
With a total of 1,183 square feet, the new floor plan houses a separate nursery
for babies born with special care needs, a nurse's station and a nursery for
healthy newborns.
"With all the capabilities
of the new nursery, we are able to provide even better care for our special
patients," said Ann Dean, nurse manager of the Mercy Childbirth Center.
"Our nurses in the nursery are trained to provide specialized neonatal
care. They have received extended training through the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Couer."
"I am very pleased
with the renovation and expansion of the nursery. It complements the current
technology in the Childbirth Center," said Dr. Greg Potts, chairman of
the maternal child department at St. John's Mercy. "Recent additions include
central fetal monitoring to continuously track a laboring mother's progress,
fetal fibrinectin testing to better predict those destined for a pre-term birth
and fetal pulse oximetry to more accurately evaluate for fetal well-being during
labor."
Also under construction
in the Childbirth Center is the family waiting area. The waiting room will be
expanded to further accommodate families and visitors while waiting for the
special delivery.
St. John's Mercy Hospital
delivers approximately 1000 babies each year. For more information about or
