American
Hospital Association (AHA)
Hospital
Award for Volunteer Excellence (HAVE)
May 2005
St. John’s Mercy Medical Center’s Volunteer Nurse Program received
one of four American
Hospital Association’s (AHA) Hospital Awards for Volunteer Excellence (HAVE) at the AHA annual meeting in Washington, D.C., in May 2005.
The HAVE Awards are selected by health care executives across the country and
showcase the value of hospital volunteers who are helping hospitals care for
people and improve the health of their communities. The program was developed
by Sally Rundquist, R.N., B.S., clinical supervisor at the Medical Center.
Volunteer nurses at St. John’s Mercy help provide direct one-on-one patient
care. Typically, they are retired RNs and LPNs who still want to care for patients
or who have been away from nursing and would like to get back into the profession.
The nurses usually volunteer 4-6 hours a week.
Volunteer Nurses must attend a three-day orientation and competency class
at St. John’s Mercy. Requirements also include CPR-certification and an active
license for RNs.
As a result of the AHA recognition, St. John’s Mercy has consulted with 34
hospitals throughout the United States and helped to implement programs at
several area hospitals.
