Medal
of Honor
Department of Health and Human Services
In
October 2006, St. John's Mercy
Medical Center and Mid-America Transplant Services (MTS) were awarded
Medals of Honor from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at
the Second Annual Learning Congress for helping to achieve organ-donation
consent rates at or above 75 percent. These medals recognize the hard work
and commitment on the part of many individuals who have dedicated themselves
to enhancing the entire process of organ and tissue donation, from actual
consent by donor families to post-donation support for both families and
transplant recipients. The Medals of Honor are one element of the Organ Donation
Breakthrough Collaborative, two highly successful national initiatives to
increase organ-donation rates in the nation's largest hospitals.
