Other Rotations

Residents have four months of rotations divided between Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care and Externships.

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery
Residents have the opportunity to work with OMFS attending staff to provide surgical care for the JFK Clinic patients. Residents learn a variety of surgical procedures from simple to surgical extractions and pre-prosthetic surgery. Many of these procedures are done under I.V. sedation so residents also learn to administer I.V. medications and monitor the patient appropriately. Residents also have the opportunity to participate with OMFS attendings during rounds, office hours, emergency room, and operating room cases.

Anesthesiology
For two weeks residents will spend the Anesthesia rotation learning pre-op evaluation, medical risk assessment, intubation, airway management, starting IVs, and post-op management of patients undergoing general anesthesia.

Emergency Medicine
For four weeks residents will be assigned to the Medicine rotation learning history and physical examination/assessment, diagnostic lab studies and interpretation, and medical emergency management.

Critical Care Medicine
For four weeks residents will work with an attending providing care for critically ill patients. They will gain experience in providing care in situations and develop a better understanding of comprehensive care and treatment of critically ill patients.

Craniofacial
For four weeks residents will spend time working with two pediatric plastic surgeons on staff at St. John's Mercy Medical Center. Residents will work with assistants in cases including cleft lip/palate repair, osteotomies and facial trauma.

Externships
There are two 2 week periods available during which residents can use their remaining off-service time to schedule visits in various settings including the practices of general dentists and specialists, or other relevant learning opportunities.
