General Obstetrics
St.
John's Mercy Medical Center Obstetrical Unit is comprised of 23 LDRs, 3 Operating
Rooms, as well as Antepartum and Postpartum Rooms. The Unit is well designed
to accommodate over 8,000 deliveries yearly. The Attending Staff consists
of 110 general Obstetricians, Maternal-Fetal
Medicine Specialists, and Nurse Midwifes.
The Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit and the Special Care Nursery adjoin Labor and Delivery and provide easy
transport for critical neonates. The residents participate in the great majority
of the vaginal deliveries and all operative vaginal deliveries and
cesarean sections. The broad based general obstetrical staff and clinic patients
provide a breadth to the surgical experience that the residents enjoy.
St.
John's Mercy Medical Center Labor and Delivery Suite has been featured on
both the Learning Channel as well as the Discovery Health Channel. The
"Birth Day" series on Discovery Health Channel highlighted
St. John's Mercy Medical Center on a series of twelve
episodes for which the residents were highly visible.
The St. John's Mercy Medical Center
Women's Evaluation Unit is comprised of twelve obstetrical triage rooms.
This busy unit provides care to more than 700 pregnant women each month.
Medical screening is completed by Certified Nurse Midwives who serve as faculty
to the OB/Gyn interns on-service. Pregnant women who present to St. John's
Mercy Medical Center are first evaluated in this unit and triaged to
Labor and Delivery, the Antepartum Unit, or discharged home. The intern's
experiences include: evaluation of labor, preterm labor, rupture of membranes,
preeclampsia, abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, and more. Physical assessment,
pelvic and speculum exams, and bedside ultrasound skills are also enhanced.
Fourth year electives are available for visiting student physicians. Please click here for more information, or e-mail our Education Coordinator, Kay Edwards.
