Labor Support
Techniques
Providing physical and emotional support to women in labor is as important
as providing quality medical care. Labor and delivery nurses at St.
John's Mercy Medical Center are now better prepared to care for women
who are in labor, after receiving labor support training from Lamaze
International. The training will help ensure that nurses have the high
level of skill that is necessary to support all women who are in labor,
from those who need additional support due to their circumstances to
women who choose to use natural childbirth methods.
Nursing Fellowship
Programs
While a nursing shortage is being felt across the nation, it is estimated
that St. Louis is experiencing a shortage of 1500 to 3000 nurses. St.
John's Mercy Medical Center operates five nursing fellowship programs,
which are offered to recent nursing school graduates and nurses who
want to change their specialty. Nurses learn the ins and outs of their
specialty area, through classroom and clinical experience. The fellowship
is offered in perinatal care, medical/surgical care, operating room
care, neonatal intensive care and critical care. The fellowship program
is used to recruit nurses to work in these five specialty areas.
Exercise during
Pregnancy
St. John's Mercy offers moms-to-be several exercise class options to
help get their bodies in shape for pregnancy and labor. Many of the
classes focus on pelvic and abdominal strength.
Fitness First
A registered nurse and exercise physiologist offer an individualized
exercise and education program for those with risk factors for heart
disease.
