Family Focused Care Nursing Fellowship

What is the Fellowship?
The Family Focused Care fellowship is an extended orientation program designed for graduate nurses and nurses who are coming to the acute care mother-baby setting from other areas of health care.

The fellowship is designed to:

  • Provide an evidenced-based didactic foundation
  • Provide a supervised clinical practicum.
  • Prepare the nurse to provide care for post-partum mothers ranging from normal to those with high risk complications.
  • Prepare the nurse to care for newborns from birth through the first few days of life.
  • Prepare the nurse to care for newborns experiencing complications during the transitional period and throughout the hospital stay.
  • Prepare the nurse to care for high-risk antepartum patients.

What Can I Expect?
The fellowship includes 32 hours of class time and a minimum of six weeks of clinical experience with a preceptor.

Topics covered include:

  • Professional development; delegation, communication, critical thinking, prioritizing
  • An overview of the following topics:
    • Physiological changes of pregnancy
    • Physiological changes in the postpartum patient,
    • Antepartum risk factors and complications
    • Postpartum complications
    • Breastfeeding techniques
    • Newborn Adaptation and Assessment
    • Transition in the Newborn
    • Common complications of the Newborn

What Will I Learn?
With specifics included for mother-baby clients:

  • Health assessment data (physical, psychosocial,
    cultural, and diagnostic)
  • Identifying and prioritizing care for maternal patients with complications including:
    • Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
    • Diabetes
    • Post-partum hemorrhage
    • Infection
    • DIC
    • Rh disease
    • Preterm Labor
    • Premature Rupture of Membranes
    • Placenta Previa
    • Abruptio Placenta
  • Common Maternal Clinical Procedures
    • Blood and Blood Product administration
    • Lab result interpretation
    • IV insertion and maintenance
    • Education of patient regarding self and infant care
  • Breast feeding techniques
  • Identifying and prioritizing care for newborn patients with complications including:
    • Respiratory complications
    • Infection
    • Hyperbilirubinemia
    • Hypoglycemia
    • Thermoregulation
  • Common Nursery Clinical Procedures
    • Hood oxygen set-up and administration
    • Venipuncture and capillary blood draws
    • IV insertions and maintenance
    • Phototherapy
    • Isolette
