Tuition Reimbursement
Tuition will be reimbursed for college level course and/or degree completion programs that pertain to the business and opportunities at St. John's Mercy Medical Center. Employees are eligible for this program after their introductory period (90 days of employment). Tuition will be reimbursed 100 percent up to $3,000 per year for full time employees and 50 percent up to $1,500 per year for part time. There is no lifetime cap on the amount of money the Medical Center will reimburse for any one employee's tuition. For information, contact Organizational Development at 314-251-6198.

Student Loan Repayment Assistance
Any nurse who has obtained his/her initial nursing degree from an accredited nursing program (LPN, A.D.N., B.S.N. or diploma) within six months prior to employment with St. John's Mercy Medical Center may apply for assistance in paying of student loans. Must apply within six months of employment as, or promotion to, GN.

Nurse Scholar Loan Program
Charles E. Thoele Scholarship Program
The applicant must be a dependent child up to age 23 of an active, full-time or part-time employee of SMHS. The award is for $1,000. Applications available in January, deadline is March 1.

Health Career Foundations Scholarship/Loan Program
For students planning to enroll or already be enrolled in a part-time or full-time course of study leading to a certificate, diploma, license, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree in an eligible healthcare field. All scholarships/loans are based on school costs with a maximum of $4000 for one year of study. The award will consist of 1/2 scholarship and 1/2 loan. See brochure for specific information and fields of study that are eligible for this program. Applications available in January, deadline April 1.

Jane Whelan Scholarship
The scholarship will support the pursuit of an advanced professional degree with knowledge gained to enhance the practice of nursing. The applicant must be a Registered Nurse employed at least two years at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center as a regular employee with guaranteed time. Each year a candidate will receive a cash award of $2,000.00 to provide an opportunity to enroll/continue in a graduate program. Applications available in February, deadline March 15.

St. John’s Mercy Scholar Loan Program
The St. John’s Mercy Scholar Loan program is available to students for courses of study in designated allied health fields. The designated fields may change from time to time as dictated by issues of labor supply and demand in these fields. The recipient must be a current SJM co-worker. The program offers up to $10,000 to cover qualified educational expenses with a 2 ½ year work commitment after graduation.

RN to BSN Scholarship Program
This scholarship provides financial support to SJMMC RN’s, who have been employed at SJM for at least one year, and are pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. The RN must work at least a .6 FTE in-patient bedside nurse. There is a $5,000/year maximum, with a lifetime maximum of $10,000. Applications are available at any time.

Adoption Assistance
Through adoption assistance, you may be reimbursed up to $1,000 for the adoption of an eligible child - up to three adoptions per calendar year. Reimbursement occurs after the adoption is final and you have submitted a copy of the final adoption paperwork, along with supporting documentation of eligible expenses, to the Human Resources department. To receive reimbursement, you must make your request within 60 days of the adoption's effective date. Keep in mind, any adoption assistance you receive is subject to taxes.

Referral Program
Employees who refer applicants who are subsequently hired by the Medical Center will be eligible to receive bonuses and prizes. For each person the employee refers, he/she will receive:

  • $50 gift certificate
  • After the referral completes 90 days of employment $500.
