Mercy Service Volunteer Program

Mercy Service Volunteers are those volunteers with a specific interest in devoting their time to direct patient care. Mercy Service Volunteers receive additional training by RNs in order to be competent at the bed side.

Many young people interested in a health care career try this program to experience patient care firsthand. In addition to general volunteer tasks, Mercy Service Volunteers may perform the following tasks:

  • Assist with admission, discharge and transfers
  • Perform safety checks – ID, fall, rails, bed locks, call light, phone
  • Feed patients under instruction of nursing staff
  • Assist with menu selection
  • Oral care
  • Record oral intake and food consumed on nutrition sheet
  • Rehab – assist staff with transfers

To learn more about St. John's Mercy Medical Center's Mercy Service Volunteer program, please call the volunteer office at 314-251-6180.
